Anthropic Built a Marketplace. No Commission, Complicated Timing.
Anthropic launched the Claude Marketplace this week. Enterprise customers can buy Claude-powered apps from third-party vendors, and Anthropic takes no cut. AWS charges 3–15% for the same setup. Walking away from that isn't accidental.

How it works
The mechanics are straightforward. Enterprises already on annual Anthropic spending commitments can point that budget at partner tools inside the marketplace. Anthropic handles all invoicing centrally. One vendor relationship, one bill, access to six products at launch.

Why give up the commission?
AWS Marketplace charges vendors 3–15% per transaction. Azure does the same. Anthropic is waiving that entirely. Taken at face value, it looks generous. The real read: Anthropic is betting that keeping enterprises inside its billing ecosystem is worth more long-term than any transaction revenue it could collect now.
If a company already has a $500K Anthropic commitment and can spend part of it on Harvey for legal work and Snowflake for data, they have less reason to open separate procurement cycles with other AI vendors. About that Pentagon thing
Twenty-four hours before the marketplace went live, the US Defense Department designated Anthropic a "supply-chain risk." That label is normally reserved for foreign adversaries like Huawei. Applying it to a US AI company is genuinely unusual.
The disagreement: Anthropic wanted written assurances that Claude wouldn't be used for mass surveillance or autonomous weapons without human oversight. The Defense Department, which held a $200M Anthropic contract signed in July 2025, wanted access for "all lawful purposes." They couldn't reach an agreement.
Companies working with the Pentagon must now certify they don't use Anthropic models. Palantir, which relies on Claude for roughly 60% of its US government revenue, is directly affected.
Whether this is a temporary standoff or something longer-running is unclear. What's clear is that the timing made for an odd launch week. Anthropic opened a new enterprise channel and lost access to a significant slice of the government market on the same day.
The part that doesn't quite add up
Anthropic has spent the last year selling Claude Code and Claude for Work partly on the idea that AI can replace SaaS. Why pay subscription fees when your AI handles it? That was a real pitch to real enterprise buyers.
Now they're opening a storefront for the exact vendors that pitch would put out of business. You can read it charitably: they reconsidered, or they realized enterprises still want specialized tools even if AI handles generalist work. You can read it cynically: they want a piece of the AI ecosystem regardless of which layer wins.
Probably both are true. Either way, the vendors now have a distribution channel through Anthropic that they didn't have before, so most of them aren't complaining.
Where this goes
Six partners and a limited preview isn't a marketplace yet. It becomes one if enough vendors join and if enterprises actually consolidate AI procurement this way rather than managing separate vendor relationships.
The no-commission model is smart bait for early partners. The Pentagon fallout will slow things down for government-adjacent customers.
